From a Christian philosophical and apologetical point of view this is a great example of the religion of science. “In search for the Theory of Everything”. How profound! How absurd! Yet today this would be called science since it is a scientist speaking. The Universe creates itself from nothing! Notice the religious language that Vilenkin uses. Observe how he calls it all a “mystery” (1 Timothy 3:16), notice how he falls into the need to give platonic explanations for the laws of science and mathematics. He feels the tension. He has no real solution. Deep down he knows that you can´t get something from nothing, that is it philosophically absurd, yet he wants to insist that it could happen. He is true follower of his god. He needs a real miracle! This is a man of faith. It is impossible to escape from faith! You must unavoidably start from unproven pre-theoretical propositions as to the nature of reality. And that starting point is always the god or in a Christian sense, the God of the system. It seems to me that we Christians have always had a theory of everything! It is clearly declared in the Bible. It is call Creation ex-nihilo of the Universe by God, the God of the Bible. “In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.” But unlike science we also know the why! For of him, and through him, and to him, are all things: to whom be glory for ever. Amen (Romans 11:36, See also Hebrews 1:3) We too has a pre-theoretical starting point and like them our starting point is our God… The Personal Creator of the Heavens and the Earth! The Ontological Trinity!
